About The Speaker
Julia Joachim is the Director of Social Services at Methodist Home for Nursing and Rehabilitation and has worked in the field of social work for almost 10 years. Ms. Joachim is a proud alumnus of Fordham University undergraduate program and the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services. She originally aspired to work with children, however, this changed after beginning her first field placement at a nursing home, where she came to love working with the geriatric population.
- Having discovered the field, she was meant to work in, she quickly looked for related work. One night in between her social work classes, she came across on the job opportunities boards, a posting for a "part-time social work assistant" at Methodist Home for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Riverdale, NY. Ms. Joachim interviewed and was offered the position, not knowing that this would be the place where she would ultimately become the Director of Social Work. As she pursued her degree in social work full-time, she continued to work part-time as the social worker assistant.
- After graduating with her Masters in Social Work, Ms. Joachim transitioned into a new role at Methodist Home, as the Director of Admissions and Medicaid Coordinator, where she would learn the intricacies of the nursing home operations, administration and health insurance. Eventually, Ms. Joachim desired a return to direct patient care and with no available social work positions at Methodist Home, was forced to venture out to another nursing home. She worked as a full-time social worker, gaining valuable skills and experience, that would prepare her for her next career milestone and return to the Methodist Home as the Director of Social Services, in 2017.
- Ms. Joachim, has enjoyed learning the many histories and backgrounds of her residents, while offering a listening ear and sounding board. She enjoys her friendly encounters with her resident’s and working with their families to aid in their transition to the nursing home or to their communities. She is an avid advocate for resident’s rights, and prides herself on being both an ear and mouthpiece for older adults.
- Methodist Home is near and dear to Ms. Joachim, having been the place that has facilitated her professional growth and career advancement. During her time at Methodist Home she married her wonderful and supportive husband, Donnie Coriolan and together they gleefully welcomed their beautiful daughter Lyla. Methodist Home is not just a home to the residents that reside and receive services from there, but it's also an extended family to the staff like Julia Joachim, whom has been fortunate to achieve the multitude of milestones under the great leadership of its Administrator, Maria Perez.

About The Speaker
Ellen Clark has masters degrees in Social Work and Psychology and a PhD in Psychology and a long history of administering and providing therapeutic services to adults and children in private practice, family service agencies and hospitals, and “connected” with people easily.
- Although she lived in Manhattan, she much preferred a more suburban or rural setting - and so Fieldston - and the wonderful patio at Methodist - was immediately therapeutic for her. In addition, as luck would have it, the great room, chapel etc. where she would spend a good deal of time-was similar to the décor and style of the Mohonk Mountain House upstate which she adored! Obviously the privacy and freedom of individual rooms was important in trying to lessen the feelings of loss.
- The ability - prior to admission - to meet the head nurse, activities director and others - and discuss Ellen and her needs (she was still pretty independent and “with it”) was a reassuring process. The small population (compared to so many huge facilities) suggested –and turned out to be true-everyone knows who Ellen is - and she can get to know them too.
- Ellen has been at Methodist for almost 4 years. Her partner, Karen, has found the responsiveness of the staff (especially director of nursing and activities staff) – to the needs of both of theirs - reassuring. She has been able to “connect” with staff and other residents, forming some friendships, actively participating in all activities -and becoming more comfortable with the routines.
- One thing Karen noted and found reassuring upon her first visit to the home-and which continues-is the reception staff who greet all residents as they return from appointments etc with the phrase “welcome home”-that’s the feeling you want to give residents!

About The Speaker
Karen Kane is a licensed clinical social worker with a long history of work with families in child welfare-as well as with a wide range of clients served in our supportive housing programs.
- This did not necessarily prepare her emotionally for placing her partner, Ellen, in a nursing home-but did make her more attuned to the accommodations and services which enable clients to live their best lives.
- She made what seemed like an endless search for the appropriate place for Ellen-and then engaged the help of a care manager who introduced her to Methodist Nursing Home.
